Secession refers to the act of withdrawing from an organization or alliance. In the context of the Civil War, several Southern states chose to secede from the Union after Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860. They believed that they had the right to leave the Union in order to protect their interests, particularly regarding the institution of slavery. The first state to secede was South Carolina, followed by others like Mississippi and Alabama.
