The Early Republic: Washington to Jefferson

The Early Republic, spanning from the presidencies of George Washington to Thomas Jefferson (1789-1809), was a formative period in which the United States confronted the challenges of nation-building and governance. Washington, as the first president, set critical precedents, including the establishment of a cabinet and the principle of neutrality in foreign affairs.

His Farewell Address warned against the dangers of political parties and foreign alliances. Jefferson's presidency marked the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of the nation and underscored the theme of westward expansion. This era solidified the principles of republicanism and the importance of civic virtue among the citizenry.
