Relief Sculpture in Clay (Part 2)

Practice relief sculpture in this art lesson: relief sculpture in clay (part 2).

🎨 Studio Brief #16

A relief sculpture is raised from a flat background, like a picture that pops out of the wall.

🎯 Your mission

Squish, pinch, build. Trust your hands.

⚡ The twist

If it cracks, work the crack into the design.

What you'll learn

A relief sculpture is raised from a flat background, like a picture that pops out of the wall. Create a nature scene—leaves, flowers, or animals—on a clay slab.

Sketch your design lightly on the surface with a pointed tool.

Step 3 of 3

Add clay to build up the raised parts: roll thin coils for stems, press flat pieces for leaves, sculpt small forms for flowers.

🤯 Mind = Blown

🤯 Clay shrinks about 10% when it dries. Plan for it.
