Coil Pot Construction (Part 9)

Practice coil building in this art lesson: coil pot construction (part 9).

🎨 Studio Brief #84

Build a pot by rolling long coils of clay and stacking them in rings.

🎯 Your mission

If it cracks, that's part of the story.

⚡ The twist

No tools — just your hands.

CardboardWire (thin gauge)Air-dry clay

Step 1 of 5

Roll a flat disc of clay for the base, about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 2 of 5

Roll long, even coils of clay, each about the thickness of your finger.

Step 3 of 5

Place the first coil on the edge of the base and press gently. Stack coils on top, slightly overlapping.

Step 4 of 5

Smooth the inside seams with your finger or a tool. You can leave the outside coils visible for texture or smooth them too.

Step 5 of 5

Shape the pot by placing coils slightly inward (to narrow) or outward (to widen).
