Practice wet-on-wet in this art lesson: watercolor sunset (part 5).

🎨 Studio Brief #49

Paint a sunset using the wet-on-wet watercolor technique.

🎯 Your mission

Make a feeling with color, not a thing.

⚡ The twist

Skip the color you'd normally pick.

What you'll learn

Paint a sunset using the wet-on-wet watercolor technique. By wetting the paper first, colors blend smoothly into each other, creating the soft gradients of a real sky.

Step 1 of 3

Use a large brush to wet the entire paper with clean water. The surface should be shiny but not puddling.

Step 2 of 3

Load your brush with yellow and paint a band across the lower third of the sky.

Step 3 of 3

Without waiting for the yellow to dry, add orange above it, then red, then purple at the top.
