Lesson 20 of 20 · If This, Then That

If This, Then That — Part 20

Simple cause and effect.

What you'll learn

You will learn that code runs top to bottom in order, and that changing the order changes the result.

Words to know

Sequence: A list of steps that happen one after another in order.
Order: The sequence in which steps run. Changing the order can change the result.
print(): A command that shows a message on the screen.

Press ▶ Run and see what the computer says!

1Read the code above. Notice how each print() is on its own line — the computer reads them top to bottom, one after another.
2The output would be: Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Done! — in that exact order. The order of lines decides the order of output.
3Imagine swapping Step 2 and Step 3. The output would change! In a sequence, order matters.
4A sequence is a list of instructions in order. Every program is built from sequences. You just learned the most basic building block of coding!

Auto-run is on: change the code and the result updates by itself.
