Veterans Day honours everyone who has served in the United States armed forces, living or dead, which distinguishes it from Memorial Day. It falls on 11 November because the armistice ending the fighting of the First World War took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, and the day was originally called Armistice Day. Congress renamed it in 1954 after the Second World War and Korea produced millions more veterans. Unlike most federal holidays, it is not moved to a Monday: an attempt to do so in the 1970s was reversed after objections that the date itself carries the meaning. Many other countries mark the same date as Remembrance Day, often with a red poppy drawn from the poem In Flanders Fields.
