Start by reading each one for what it claims and what it bases that on, noting the author, date, and purpose. Then lay the claims side by side and mark where they agree, where they disagree, and where only one source says something at all — that last category deserves the most suspicion. Where they disagree, ask which source was in a better position to know and which had an interest in the answer. Finally, write the synthesis around the question rather than around the sources, so the result is an answer supported by evidence rather than a series of summaries. A reader should not be able to tell which source you read first. Questions: 1 What should you note about each source? 2 Which category of claim deserves the most suspicion? 3 How should the final synthesis be organised? www.littleactivity.com 4th Grade · Literacy
