A contribution is something a person or group added that others then built on, and it can be an object, an idea, a method, or an institution. Contributions are easy to misattribute, because credit tends to attach to whoever published, patented, or was already famous — a pattern historians of science call the Matthew effect. Many important contributions were collective: a canal, a code of law, or a public health improvement usually has no single author. Judging a contribution means asking what changed because of it, not how celebrated it became. Some contributions look small at the time and enormous later, such as standardised shipping containers, and others are the reverse.
