Scale tells you how distance on a map relates to distance on the ground, and it can be given as a ratio like 1:50,000, as a statement such as one centimetre to half a kilometre, or as a marked bar. A bar scale is the most reliable, because it shrinks or enlarges with the map when it is photocopied or resized. Large-scale maps cover a small area in great detail; small-scale maps cover a large area with less, which is the opposite of what the names suggest to most people. To measure a curved route, lay a string along it and then straighten the string against the bar scale. Always check the scale before comparing two maps, since a country can look larger simply because it is drawn at a different one. Questions: 1 Why is a bar scale the most reliable form? 2 What is the difference between a large-scale and a small-scale map? 3 How can you measure a curved route? www.littleactivity.com 5th Grade · Literacy
