The Trail of Tears is the name given to the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation from Georgia and neighbouring states to Indian Territory in 1838 and 1839. Federal troops rounded families into stockades with little warning, and detachments of about a thousand people walked roughly a thousand miles through winter. Roughly four thousand Cherokee died of exposure, disease, and starvation, about a quarter of those removed. The removal proceeded even though the Supreme Court had ruled in the Cherokee's favour, because President Jackson and then Van Buren declined to enforce the decision. Other nations — Choctaw, Muscogee, Chickasaw, and Seminole — endured comparable removals, and the Seminole fought a long war rather than leave. Questions: 1 How far did the Cherokee have to walk, and in what season? 2 Roughly how many died, and of what causes? 3 Why did removal proceed despite the Supreme Court ruling? www.littleactivity.com 5th Grade · Literacy
