The Maurya Empire united most of the Indian subcontinent from about 322 BCE under Chandragupta Maurya and reached its height under his grandson Ashoka. After a war in Kalinga that Ashoka said killed and displaced hundreds of thousands, he converted to Buddhism, renounced conquest, and had edicts on tolerance and welfare carved on pillars across the empire — a rare case of a ruler publicly regretting a victory. The Gupta Empire, roughly 320 to 550 CE, is called a golden age for its scholarship rather than its size. Gupta mathematicians used a decimal place-value system and a symbol for zero, and Aryabhata calculated pi and argued that the Earth rotates. Gupta rulers governed more loosely, leaving local kings in place in exchange for tribute.
