Download Free PDFWrite Ratios Three Ways MATH · 6TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. The same ratio can be written in three forms: with a colon as 3:4, with words as 3 to 4, and as a fraction, three quarters. All three mean the same comparison, and being fluent in all three matters because different contexts use different notation — recipes use words, maps use colons, and algebra uses fractions. The order is part of the meaning, so 3:4 and 4:3 are different ratios and the labels must stay attached to the right numbers. The fraction form is the most useful for calculating, because it can be scaled, compared, and set equal to another fraction to form a proportion. Writing the units or labels beside each number prevents most of the mistakes that occur when a ratio is carried through several steps. Questions: 1 What are the three ways to write a ratio? 2 Why does the order matter? 3 Which form is most useful for calculating, and why? www.littleactivity.com 6th Grade · Math
