Three dynasties reunified and transformed China after centuries of division. The Sui, though it lasted under forty years, built the Grand Canal linking the Yellow and Yangtze rivers, which allowed southern rice to feed northern cities and remains in use today. The Tang, from 618 to 907, was cosmopolitan and confident: Chang'an was the largest city in the world, foreign merchants and religions were tolerated, and poetry by Li Bai and Du Fu reached a peak still studied. The Song, from 960, lost territory in the north but led the world economically, with paper money, gunpowder weapons, the magnetic compass, and movable type. Song China also expanded the civil service examinations, making a bureaucracy chosen by merit central to government in a way no other state then matched. Questions: 1 What did the Grand Canal make possible? 2 What made the Tang capital notable? 3 Name three Song technologies. www.littleactivity.com 7th Grade · Literacy
