The Black Death reached Europe in 1347 aboard ships arriving at Sicily and killed perhaps a third to a half of the population within five years. It was caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, spread by fleas on rats and, in its pneumonic form, directly between people; nobody at the time knew this, and explanations ranged from bad air to divine punishment. Quarantine, which comes from the Venetian practice of holding ships forty days, was one of the few effective responses. The social consequences were enormous: so many labourers died that survivors could demand higher wages, which weakened serfdom, and attempts to freeze wages by law provoked revolts. Jewish communities were falsely blamed and massacred in many towns, one of the worst episodes of persecution in medieval Europe. Questions: 1 How was the disease actually spread? 2 Where does the word quarantine come from? 3 How did the death toll change the position of labourers? www.littleactivity.com 7th Grade · Literacy
