The Counter-Reformation was the Catholic Church's response to Protestantism, and it combined genuine reform with vigorous opposition. The Council of Trent, meeting on and off from 1545 to 1563, ended the sale of indulgences, required bishops to live in their dioceses, established seminaries to train priests properly, and reaffirmed the doctrines Protestants had rejected. New religious orders, above all the Jesuits founded by Ignatius of Loyola, ran schools and missions from Brazil to Japan and became the church's most effective teachers. The church also strengthened the Inquisition and published an Index of forbidden books. Baroque art and music were promoted deliberately as tools of persuasion, using drama and emotion to move worshippers where argument alone might not. Questions: 1 Name two reforms the Council of Trent made. 2 What role did the Jesuits play? 3 Why did the church promote Baroque art? www.littleactivity.com 7th Grade · Literacy
