Foreshadowing is planting a hint of something that will happen later, so that when it arrives the reader feels it was inevitable rather than arbitrary. It can be direct, as when a narrator says this was the last time she saw the house, or indirect, through an object, a weather change, a dream, or an offhand remark. The principle known as Chekhov's gun says that a rifle on the wall in act one must be fired by act three, meaning that details given prominence create expectations a writer must honour. Effective foreshadowing is noticeable only in retrospect, so a hint that is too obvious spoils the surprise and one too faint does not do its work. Red herrings are the deliberate opposite, planted to mislead, and mysteries depend on mixing the two. Questions: 1 What does foreshadowing achieve? 2 What is Chekhov's gun? 3 What is a red herring? www.littleactivity.com 7th Grade · Literacy
