Atoms SCIENCE · 9TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that still behaves like that element. It is mostly empty space: a dense nucleus of protons and neutrons sits at the centre, and electrons occupy the volume around it. If a nucleus were the size of a marble, the atom would be roughly the size of a sports stadium. Atoms are astonishingly small — about 0.1 nanometres across, so several million would span the width of a human hair. Because the number of protons defines which element an atom is, an atom cannot be turned into another element by chemistry; only nuclear processes can do that. Chemical change rearranges which atoms are joined, never the atoms themselves.
