Modern humans emerged in Africa and spread across the rest of the world over tens of thousands of years, reaching Australia by about sixty-five thousand years ago and the Americas by at least fifteen thousand. Lower sea levels during ice ages exposed land bridges, including Beringia between Siberia and Alaska, and coastal routes by boat were probably used as well. People rarely migrated as a single planned journey; groups moved a few miles a generation as populations grew or resources shifted. Evidence comes from dated archaeological sites, from language families, and from DNA, and the three lines of evidence are checked against each other. Migration has never stopped, and the same pressures — climate, conflict, opportunity — still drive it.
