Writing was invented at least three separate times, in Mesopotamia, in China, and in Mesoamerica, and possibly in Egypt as well. The earliest known system, Sumerian cuneiform, began as pictures used for accounting: marks recording how much grain went into a storehouse. Over centuries the pictures became abstract signs standing for sounds, which meant that any spoken word, including a name, could be written down. The alphabet, developed from Egyptian signs by Semitic speakers around 1800 BCE, reduced the system to a few dozen letters and made literacy far easier to acquire. Every alphabet in use today, from Greek to Latin to Arabic to Hebrew, descends from that one invention. Questions: 1 Where was writing invented independently? 2 What did the earliest writing record? 3 Why did the alphabet make literacy easier? www.littleactivity.com 5th Grade · Literacy
