8th Grade Science — Engineering and Design — Iteration: the Value of a Cheap Failure A free 1-page hands-on science activity for 8th Grade (ages 13–14). It practices science, observation, inquiry. Download the PDF with no account and no email.
Free printable iteration: the value of a cheap failure science worksheet. A design process is a loop rather than a line: define the criteria, build the cheapest thing that could fail informatively, test it, change one thing and test again. The value of an early prototype is information per unit cost, which is why the first version is deliberately crude — a model too solid to fail teaches nothing about the design that eventually will. Changing one variable per iteration is what makes the result attributable rather than merely better. Part of the Engineering and Design lesson track. For 8th Grade Science (ages 13–14).

Purpose / Research Question: Why do engineers repeat the design cycle? Materials: prototype, spare materials, measuring tools, log sheet Hypothesis (If... then... because...): Write your own: If I change ___, then ___ because ___ Independent Variable: The iteration number Dependent Variable: Performance against the requirement Procedure: 1. Record the starting performance 2. Make one improvement 3. Test and record 4. Repeat for three cycles 5. Plot performance against cycle Data / Results: Cycle Improvement Performance 1 2 3 Conclusion: Now change one other thing and predict what happens. www.littleactivity.com 8th Grade · Science

Lab Report — Crystal Growing SCIENCE · KINDERGARTEN Name Date Fill in this page as you do your investigation. What are we finding out? How do crystals form? What we need: salt or sugar, hot water (adult), jar, string, pencil, spoon, magnifier What I think will happen: If the solution cools slowly, then the crystals will be... What I will change: How quickly the solution cools What I will watch: Size and number of crystals What to do: 1. Stir salt into hot water until no more dissolves 2. Hang a string from a pencil into the jar 3. Put one jar somewhere cool and one warm 4. Leave both undisturbed for several days 5. Compare the crystals with a magnifier What we saw: Jar Cooling Crystal size A Slow B Fast What I learned: What would you do differently if you ran it again? www.littleactivity.com Kindergarten · Science

What we need: balloon, wool jumper, small paper pieces, empty can, thin water stream, hair What I think will happen: If I rub the balloon on wool, then it will... What I will change: Whether the balloon has been rubbed What I will watch: Whether it attracts the test object What to do: 1. Hold an unrubbed balloon near paper pieces 2. Rub it on wool for 20 seconds 3. Hold it near the paper again 4. Try it near a thin stream of water 5. Try rolling the empty can What we saw: Test Before rubbing After rubbing Paper pieces Water stream Can Trial 4 What I learned: Rubbing moves electrons, leaving a charge that... www.littleactivity.com Kindergarten · Science
