Write the model. When is it empty? Is 60 minutes sensible?" A SOLID ANSWER y = 200 − 5x, 40 minutes, and 60 rejected as impossible. Plot it and decide whether a linear model fits. Find the equation from two points and state what each parameter means. Predict a future value, then wait and check it. Write one equation per constraint in the problem — usually a count and a total. Choose the method: substitution when a variable is already isolated, elimination otherwise. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE COMMON FACTOR FIRST You need: Paper, Algebra tiles or drawn rectangles Fix the order: common factor, then pattern (difference of squares), then trinomial. Use an area rectangle to see why (x + 3)(x + 4) expands as it does. For trinomials, find two numbers multiplying to c and adding to b — systematically, listing factor pairs. Always check by expanding back. Do a mixed set so they have to choose the method, not just apply the one from the lesson. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Common factor first, always. Graph it and mark where it crosses the x-axis. Same numbers. Try one with no real roots and see the parabola miss the axis entirely. Find the vertex and interpret it in a real context — maximum height, minimum cost. Model a real projectile with a quadratic and answer a question with it. Build a doubling table and watch it become absurd. It reaches the moon. Compare a linear and exponential table side by side over 30 steps. What does it not tell you?" A SOLID ANSWER Strong positive association, and explicitly not causation, nor validity outside the data range. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 FIT IT AND BREAK IT You need: Real data set, A spreadsheet or calculator Collect or find a real paired data set of at least twenty points. Plot it, fit a line, and record the equation and r. Interpret the slope in real units. Predict a value inside the data range and one far outside it, and discuss which is defensible. Remove one outlier and refit — see how much the model moves. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "That prediction is thirty years past your data. On what basis do you believe it?" Fit by eye and interpret the slope. Compare a linear and an exponential fit to the same data and argue for one.
