Turn it ninety degrees. "Same amount? Why?" That's commutativity, discovered rather than told. Hunt arrays in the house: windows, tiles, egg boxes, chocolate bars. Write it as repeated addition, then as 3 × 4, and say both mean the same thing. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Don't count them all. How many in a row? How many rows? Count in rows." Twos and fives only, which they can already skip count. Split a big array into two easier ones: 7 rows of 4 as 5 rows plus 2 rows.
