Breaking long words apart LITERACY · 3RD GRADE Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Reading · 3rd Grade 10 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Splits an unfamiliar multisyllable word into chunks and reads it — un/for/tun/ate/ly. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK Write: fantastic, remembering, unbelievable, temperature. "Read these." A SOLID ANSWER Three of four, with visible chunking rather than guessing. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 CHUNK IT You need: Paper, Pencil Write a long word and draw slashes between syllables together: fan/tas/tic. Teach the two easiest rules: every chunk needs a vowel, and prefixes and suffixes peel off first. Read chunk by chunk, then say the whole word fast. Take three long words from tonight's book and chunk them before reading the page. Clap the syllables of long words in conversation — it costs nothing and builds the ear. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Cover everything but the first chunk. Now the next. Now put them together fast." Two syllables, compound words first: sun/set, foot/ball. Words where the stress changes the sound — comfortable, vegetable.
