Is 9 prime? Why not?" A SOLID ANSWER 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 — and 9 rejected because 3 × 3 works. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 RECTANGLE FACTOR HUNT You need: Squared paper, Counters Give them 24 counters. Build every rectangle possible: 1×24, 2×12, 3×8, 4×6. Each rectangle's sides are a factor pair. Write them down in order. Try 7 counters. Only one rectangle exists — that's what prime means, made visible. Sort the numbers 1 to 20 into prime and composite using rectangles. Play factor bingo, or a fizz-buzz style game with multiples. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "How many different rectangles can you build with these? Each one gives you a factor pair." Numbers under 20 with counters. Prime factorisation as a factor tree, which sets up simplifying fractions perfectly.
