"Cut it by a third without losing meaning." A SOLID ANSWER Meaningfully shorter and clearer. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 DELETE TEN WORDS You need: A draft, A pen Circle every very, really, quite, a lot, basically, in order to. Delete them and reread. Almost nothing is lost. Replace two weak verb phrases with one strong verb: "made a decision" becomes "decided". Count the words before and after. Read both aloud and ask which sounds more confident. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Which word is doing no work? Cut it and see if you miss it." Just delete the filler words. Rewrite a paragraph in half the words and defend every cut.
