For the grown-up: say every prompt out loud. Nothing on this sheet asks the child to read or write. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK Write four simple words — sat, pin, mud, hop. "Sound them out and tell me the word." A SOLID ANSWER Three of four, sounding out aloud. Blending in their head comes later. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 PUSH THE SOUNDS You need: Three coins, buttons or bottle caps, Paper and pen Write a three-sound word. Put a coin under each letter. They touch each coin and say its sound, left to right, no rushing. Now sweep a finger under the whole word and say it fast: "c-a-t… cat!" Do five words that share a vowel — cat, mat, sat, hat, bat — so only the front changes. Finish by having them find one of those words in a real book. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Say each sound, then say them fast. Don't guess from the picture — check the letters." Say the sounds for them and let them only do the pushing-together. Hearing a blend is easier than producing one. Four sounds with a blend at the front: stop, flag, drum, clap.
