For the grown-up: say every prompt out loud. Nothing on this sheet asks the child to read or write. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK Hand them something textured. "What does it feel like? What are you using to find out?" A SOLID ANSWER One describing word beyond nice/yucky, and "my hands" or "touching". Not yet Getting there Solid 2 MYSTERY BAG You need: A bag or pillowcase, Four household objects Hide four objects — a sponge, a spoon, a pinecone, an orange. They reach in without looking and describe before guessing: "It's bumpy and cold." Feed them the word when they're stuck: "That's rough. Say rough." Guess, then pull it out to check. Do a smell round with the fridge open, and a sound round with your eyes closed. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Don't tell me what it is yet — tell me what it feels like." Two objects that feel completely different — a rock and a feather. They describe an object for you to guess. Producing the description is much harder than recognising it.
