Half of 3
Half of 3 is 1½
3 ÷ 2 = 1½
3 is an odd number, so it does not split into two equal whole groups — 1½ means 1 and a half.
How to find half of 3
- 1Half means splitting 3 into 2 equal groups, so work out 3 ÷ 2.
- 23 is an odd number, so it will not split into two equal whole groups — one group always ends up with one more.
- 3Put 1 in each group and there is 1 left over. Split that last one in half too.
- 4So half of 3 is 1½ — 1 and a half. The even numbers either side, 2 and 4, halve to 1 and 2.
Check it: put the two halves back together and you get 1½ + 1½ = 3.
