Half of 5 is 2½
5 ÷ 2 = 2½
5 is an odd number, so it does not split into two equal whole groups — 2½ means 2 and a half.
How to find half of 5
- 1Half means splitting 5 into 2 equal groups, so work out 5 ÷ 2.
- 25 is an odd number, so it will not split into two equal whole groups — one group always ends up with one more.
- 3Put 2 in each group and there is 1 left over. Split that last one in half too.
- 4So half of 5 is 2½ — 2 and a half. The even numbers either side, 4 and 6, halve to 2 and 3.
Check it: put the two halves back together and you get 2½ + 2½ = 5.
