Beat Patterns in Songs (Part 3)

Learn about beat patterns in songs (part 3): identify the steady pulse in a piece of music

🎵 Stage Brief #49

Clap on every beat while you count 1-2-3-4 out loud.

🎯 Your mission

Sing along — even if no one's listening.

⚡ The twist

Going up sounds happier. Going down sounds heavier. That's not magic — that's ears.

What you'll learn

Clap on every beat while you count 1-2-3-4 out loud. Now try clapping only on beats 1 and 3. That changes the feel!

✨ More to explore

🌍 Where you hear this: The melody you can't get out of your head right now is the result of years of someone else's practice.

🏆 Try this week: Make up a 4-note tune. Hum it three times. See if you remember it tomorrow.

👨‍👩‍👧 At dinner: “Hum the first notes of a song you both love. Can your kid finish it?”

Send it to a parent who wants 5 minutes of music with their kid — no instrument required.
