What Is the Whole Story Mostly About?

Stories have main ideas too. The main idea of a story is what the whole story is mostly about, not just one part. Read: 'Kenji's grandma came to visit from far away. They cooked noodles together. She taught him a song from her childhood.

When she left, Kenji sang it every night. ' One event is cooking noodles, but that is not the whole story. The story is mostly about Kenji and his grandma spending special time together.

To find it, think about the beginning, middle, and end, and look for what ties them together.

• 1A story's main idea covers the whole story.
• 2One event is not the main idea.
• 3Look for what ties the parts together.
