Silent e works with other vowels too. With i: 'pin' becomes 'pine', 'kit' becomes 'kite', 'rid' becomes 'ride'. With o: 'hop' becomes 'hope', 'not' becomes 'note', 'rob' becomes 'robe'. With u: 'cub' becomes 'cube', 'tub' becomes 'tube'.
