What you'll learn · 1 of 2

Stories are full of talking, so you will read 'said' all the time. Remember the heart part: ai says /e/, so 'said' rhymes with 'red'. Another word in almost every story is 'was'. In 'was', the a says /u/, as in 'up', and the s says /z/.

What you'll learn · 2 of 2

So we say 'wuz'. Two heart parts in one little word! Read: 'Mom said it was time for bed. ' Be careful not to mix up 'was' and 'saw'. They have the same letters in the opposite order. Look at the first letter.
