Putting Events Back in Order

When you retell, the events need to be in the right order. If they are mixed up, the story stops making sense. Here are events from a story, out of order: 'The bird flew away. A bird hurt its wing. A boy cared for the bird.

' Think: what had to happen first? The bird had to get hurt before anyone could care for it. Then it got better and flew away. The right order is: hurt wing, boy cares for it, bird flies away. Ask, 'What has to happen before this? '

• 1Events must be told in the right order.
• 2Ask what has to happen before each event.
• 3Mixed-up order makes a story confusing.
