Multiple-Meaning Words

Some words are spelled and said the same way but have different meanings. 'Bat' can be a flying animal or the stick you hit a ball with. 'Bark' can be the sound a dog makes or the outside of a tree.

'Ring' can be jewelry for your finger or the sound a bell makes. Read: 'The dog sat under the tree and began to bark. ' Here, bark is the dog's sound.

Knowing that a word can mean more than one thing stops you from getting confused when a meaning doesn't fit.

• 1One word can have different meanings.
• 2The spelling and sound stay the same.
• 3If a meaning doesn't fit, try another one.
