Periodic Sentences: Holding the Main Point

Read periodic sentences so the delayed main clause arrives with force.

A periodic sentence withholds its main clause until the very end. Writers use it to build suspense or to make a conclusion feel earned. For example: 'After the long winter, after the failed harvest, after the letters that went unanswered for months, she came home. ' Grammatically, nothing is complete until 'she came home. ' The danger when reading aloud is that your energy fades across the build-up, so the payoff sounds flat.

Instead, treat each 'after' phrase as a step on a staircase: keep the pitch suspended, perhaps rising slightly with each step, and keep your pace steady. Then, just before the main clause, take a small pause, and deliver 'she came home' more slowly and with a falling pitch. The contrast between the long climb and the short landing is the whole effect. A good test: if a listener can predict the ending by tone alone, you have read the structure well.
