Inferring an Unstated Thesis

Construct the implied thesis of an essay that never states its central claim directly.

Some essays, especially personal and literary essays, never state a thesis outright. The central idea is implied through the selection and arrangement of details, the ending, and recurring language. To infer it, gather evidence: What does the writer keep returning to? How does the essay end? What changes between the beginning and the end? Imagine an original essay that describes the writer's grandfather repairing the same radio for thirty years, never buying a new one, and ends with the writer, now an adult, carefully mending a torn jacket instead of throwing it away.

No sentence says 'Care for objects reflects care for people,' but the details point toward a claim about patience, inheritance, and resisting a disposable culture. Write your inferred thesis as a full sentence, then check it against every major section. If a section does not fit, revise the thesis rather than ignoring the section. An inferred thesis is an interpretation, so support it explicitly.

• 1Some essays imply their thesis rather than state it.
• 2Use recurring details, structure, and the ending as evidence.
• 3Check the inferred thesis against every major section.
