Longform Journalism

Read in-depth reported nonfiction that combines investigation, narrative, and analysis.

Longform journalism refers to in-depth reported articles, often thousands of words long, that investigate a subject through interviews, documents, and on-the-ground observation, and then tell it with narrative techniques. A longform piece might follow a single hospital through a winter, trace how a small town's water became contaminated, or profile a scientist across years of research. These works combine the evidence of reporting with the pull of storytelling: scenes, characters, tension, and a structure that reveals information strategically.

When reading longform for pleasure, you can still read critically. Notice how the writer knows what they claim: are there named sources, documents, direct observation? Notice what the narrative emphasizes and what it leaves out. Consider an original example: an article opens with a farmer watching a dry well, then widens to regional water policy, then returns to the farmer at the end. The personal frame makes the policy story human, but a careful reader also checks that the data supports the larger claims.
