Speculative Fiction as Thought Experiment

Read science fiction and other speculative fiction as explorations of 'what if?' questions about society.

Speculative fiction, including science fiction, dystopian fiction, and alternate history, begins with a 'what if? ' and follows its consequences. What if memories could be sold? What if a city had no night? The pleasure is partly imaginative, but the best speculative fiction also works like a thought experiment, letting readers examine present-day values by exaggerating or changing one element.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), often called one of the first science fiction novels, asks what responsibilities creators have toward what they create, a question that remains urgent. Consider an original premise: in a future where every conversation is automatically recorded and searchable, people begin speaking only in rehearsed phrases. The story is not really about technology; it is about how surveillance changes honesty.

When reading speculative fiction, identify the central 'what if,' trace how the world's rules affect characters, and ask what present-day issue the story is magnifying. That question turns entertainment into insight.

• 1Speculative fiction starts with a 'what if?'
• 2It often magnifies present-day issues.
• 3Identify the premise and trace its consequences.
