Irony as a Plot Engine

Analyze how dramatic and situational irony structure a narrative and shape suspense.

Irony at the level of plot works differently from sarcasm in dialogue. Dramatic irony occurs when readers know something a character does not, so we watch with dread or anticipation as the character acts in ignorance. Situational irony occurs when an outcome is the opposite of what was expected or intended. Consider an original plot: a town builds a high wall to keep out floods, but the wall traps the rainwater inside, and the town floods worse than ever.

The very action meant to prevent disaster causes it, which is situational irony, and it implies a theme about how fear can produce the harm it fears. Now suppose readers learn early that a letter was never delivered, while the heroine spends chapters believing she was ignored. That is dramatic irony, and it turns every scene of her resentment into tragedy. When analyzing irony, identify the gap (between knowledge or expectation and reality) and explain what the gap suggests.

• 1Dramatic irony: readers know what characters do not.
• 2Situational irony: the outcome reverses expectation.
• 3The ironic gap usually points toward theme.
