Primary Author's Purpose Review: P, I, or E?

Decide the purpose of new texts and explain your clues.

Let's practice with three new texts. Text A: 'Spiders have eight legs. Most spiders spin webs to catch food. ' True facts, so the purpose is inform. Text B: 'Come to the bake sale on Friday! Every treat is only one coin, and the money buys new books.

' It wants you to come and gives a reason, so it persuades. Text C: 'Spider Sam knitted a sweater for every leg, then fell over from the weight! ' Pretend and funny, so it entertains. For each text, name the purpose and give one clue.

That is how you show you really know.

• 1Inform: true facts.
• 2Persuade: wants you to do something, gives reasons.
• 3Entertain: pretend, funny, or exciting.
