Title Clues to Purpose

Use a book's title to guess why it was written.

A title can give you a strong hint about the author's purpose before you even open the book. Titles that start with 'All About,' 'How to,' or 'Facts About' usually inform.

Titles that sound silly or name a pretend character usually entertain, like 'The Dog Who Drove a Bus. ' Titles that tell you to do something, like 'Why You Should Recycle' or 'Join the Reading Club,' usually persuade. Try it: 'How Plants Drink Water.

' The words 'How Plants' tell you it will teach. That is inform.
