Asking Questions Before You Read

Look at the title and pictures and wonder what the book will be about.

Before you start a book, look at the cover, the title, and a few pictures. Then ask questions. Wondering gets your brain ready and gives you a reason to read. Say the title is 'The Lost Puppy' and the cover shows a puppy alone in the rain.

You might ask: Who lost the puppy? Will someone find it? Where will it go? Now, as you read, you are looking for answers. Good questions often start with who, what, where, why, or how. Questions that make you curious are the best kind.

• 1Look at the title and pictures first.
• 2Ask who, what, where, why, or how.
• 3Read to find the answers.
