Fossils are the remains or traces of plants and animals that lived a long time ago. They form when living things get buried in mud or sand. Over many years, the mud hardens and turns into rock, preserving the shape of the plant or animal. For example, a dinosaur bone can become a fossil! Fossils help scientists learn about what life was like millions of years ago.
