Comics and Picture Panels

Learn how to read books told in comic panels and speech bubbles.

Some books tell stories in comic form, with pictures in boxes called panels. The words characters say are in speech bubbles. To read them, start at the top left panel and move across, then down, just like reading lines of words.

The pictures do a lot of the storytelling, so look closely at faces and actions. For example, one panel shows a cat staring at a fishbowl. The next shows the cat with a wet nose and a speech bubble that says 'Oops.

' The pictures and the bubble together tell you what happened.
