Joining Words because, but, or

Read small words that link ideas together.

Some sight words join two ideas into one sentence. 'Because' gives a reason: 'I wore a coat because it was cold. ' It is long, but you can chunk it: be-cause. The au says /aw/ and the se says /z/.

'But' shows something different or surprising: 'I wanted to swim, but the pool was closed. ' 'Or' gives a choice: 'Do you want milk or juice?

' When you read one of these words, ask what job it is doing: giving a reason, showing a change, or offering a choice.

• 1'because' gives a reason.
• 2'but' shows something different.
• 3'or' gives a choice.
