Look, Say, Spell, Write

Use a four-step routine to lock a new sight word into memory.

Here is a routine to learn any new sight word. Look: study the word and notice its tricky part. Say: read it out loud. Spell: say each letter while you point to it. Write: cover the word and write it from memory, then uncover it and check.

Let's try 'friend'. Look: the ie is tricky, because it says /e/. Say: friend. Spell: f-r-i-e-n-d. Write it without looking. Did you remember the i before the e? Doing this a few days in a row moves a word into your sight word bank.

• 1Look, say, spell, write.
• 2Notice the tricky part first.
• 3Write it from memory, then check.
