Order Words: First, Next, Then, Last

Use sequence words to tell events in order.

Sequence words tell the order things happen. Common ones are first, next, then, after that, and last or finally. Authors use them, and you can use them when you retell. Read: 'First, Ava cracked the eggs. Next, she stirred them.

Then she cooked them in a pan. Last, she ate her breakfast. ' The order words make it easy to follow. If you mixed them up and said she ate before she cooked, it would not make sense. When you retell a story, start each part with an order word.
