When we read we look for the main idea. The main idea is what the text is mostly about. It is the big idea. The other sentences give details. Details support the main idea. They tell us more. Sometimes the main idea is in the first sentence. Sometimes it is in the last sentence. Sometimes we have to figure it out. We ask ourselves what the whole paragraph is about. Good readers look for the main idea. It helps us understand. It helps us remember. When we can find the main idea we become better readers. Try it the next time you read.
